Highway Bill Gets Discussion in Senate

Thursday, April 24th, 2014

The Highway Trust Fund is a fund used to finance countless road construction and repair projects across the country. And it’s going to run out of money soon. It could run out as early as this July, but the official date when the current highway in place stops funding the Highway Trust Fund is September 30th.

To prevent this from happening, talks are underway to get a new highway bill together. Earlier this year President Obama announced his plan to fund and significantly overhaul the nation’s transportation system, at a cost of $300 billion dollars. The Highway Trust Fund needs $100 billion in the next six to maintain its current spending on transportation projects, according to the Washington Post.

Earlier this month, several members of the Senate, including the Transportation and Infrastructure subcommittee chair Sen. Tom Carper announced that they were working on a new highway funding bill. According to overdriveonline.com, the priorities for the next bill include:

  • Passing a long-term bill, as opposed to “a short-term patch;”
  • Maintaining the formuls for existing core programs;
  • Promoting fiscal responsibility by keeping current levels of funding, plus inflation;
  • Focusing on policies that expand opportunities for rural areas;
  • Continuing our efforts to leverage local resources to accelerate the construction of transportation projects, create jobs, and spur economic growth; and
  • Requiring better information sharing regarding federal grants

It’s as of now unclear where funding for the new highway bill would come from. Proposals from various members of Congress and the President have included raising gas taxes, reforming corporate taxes, changing the tax code to redirect funding to highways, and a vehicle mileage tax.

Diesel Fuel Price Falls After Sharp Increase

Friday, April 11th, 2014

Truckers across the country are breathing a sigh of relief as the price of diesel fuel continues to fall after several weeks of significant increases. “The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel fell again in the week ended April 7, down another 1.6 cents to $3.959, according to the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Asministration,” Overdrive Online reports. Since March 17th the price of diesel has fallen by 6.2 cents. In the 5 weeks leading up to March 16th, the price had skyrocketed by 14.4 cents.

Still, there are plenty of areas of the country where the price of diesel is more than $4 a gallon. The most expensive diesel in the country can be found in New England, at $4.24 a gallon. The cheapeast diesel? $3.793 in the Gulf Coast. Overall, the price of diesel is almost the same as it was this time last year, at 1.8 cents less expensive.
