In many ways, being a trucker is more of a lifestyle than a job. Its demands, particularly upward of 300 days per year on the road, will certainly limit what time you spend at home, thus impacting relationships with those around you. And because it may be two years before you can move into a regional driving position that allows for you to return home weekly, instead of once every three weeks, spouses or partners deserve some say in your deliberations before you decide if driving a truck for a living is for you. The continuous sound of your engine running and wheels humming against the surface of the road, doesn’t exactly harmonize with whatever music you are playing. Most of the scenery on long hauls is the same, especially if you’ve driven the haul before- you’ve seen all there is to see. These two potentially deadly combinations, the white noise of the tires and nothing visually exciting to keep your attention contribute to road fatigue, is what causes the eyelids to sag and could potentially lead to much bigger problems. Driving a truck all day, sleeping in your truck, and eating at various truck stops and diners can lead a trucker down an unhealthy path. Without a regular healthy diet and staying stationary for long periods of time, this can have an adverse effect on the body. However, there are ways to stay healthy as a trucker if that is your goal.
