Diesel Prices Fall Nationally

Friday, January 17th, 2014

It looks like predictions that the price of diesel would fall in 2014 are being proven correct, at least so far. Last week the price of diesel fell 2.4 cents from the previous week, making the national average price of diesel fuel $3.886.

According to overdriveonline.com, “That’s the most the price of diesel has fallen since the week ended Nov.11 and save for that week and the week ended Setp.23 (which also had a 2.5-cent drop), the 2.4-cent decline is the largest since the week ended April 29, 2013.”

The decrease is diesel fuel prices is good news for truckers, who had seen increases for three weeks in a row before last week. The price is almost exactly the same as it was this time last year. Last year the price of diesel saw a sharp increase in the spring, followed by an equally sharp decrease in the summer, with a moderate increase in the fall. As we stated in last week’s blog, the price of diesel is predicted to fall 11 cents in 2014. From 2012 to 2013, the average price of diesel fell by 5 cents nationally.

Price of Diesel Predicted to Decrease in 2014 and 2015

Wednesday, January 15th, 2014

While the national average price for diesel has risen for the third consecutive week in a row, the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration is predicting that the price will fall in both 2014 and 2015, good news for truckers.

The national average for a gallon of diesel ended last week with a seven-tenths of a cent increase to $3.190. This is almost reaching the level of a year-over-year increase from January 2012, something which hasn’t happened since last August. However, diesel prices are expected to drop across the country in the next two years, according to data from the Energy Information Administration. The average price of diesel for 2013 was $3.92. In 2014, it’s expected to drop 11 cents to $3.81, and 4 cents in 2015 to $3.77. Of course these are only forecasts and could vary based on unforeseen circumstances. The main factor taken into account in these forecasts is the prediction that crude oil prices will drop as world supply exceeds world demand. Hopefully, truckers can look forward to steadily decreasing diesel fuel prices over the next two years.

How Truckers Can Improve Fuel Economy

Wednesday, November 13th, 2013

Fuel economy is very important for truckers, who are always looking to improve their bottom line. Advancements in cab and trailer design are always being made in order to improve aerodynamics, and therefore fuel economy, but even truckers with older cabs and trailers can reduce the amount of fuel they use with a few simple techniques.

Slowing Down

According to Overdrive Online, slowing down, even slightly, is a great way to help your bottom line. “Slowing down 1 mile per hour will improve fuel economy by 1/10 of 1 mile per gallon. That may seem small, but it equates to about $1,000 each year in most operations.” One thousand dollars for simply reducing speed by one mile per hour? That’s a pretty good tradeoff.

Progressive Shifting

Practicing progressive shifting does more than just reduce fuel usage. It’s easier on your tires and yoru driveline, extending the lifespan of both. Progressive shifting involves getting the truck moving at the lowest-possible rpm in each gear, meaning quicker shifting overall.

Smooth Driving

Curtailing rapid acceleration and deceleration improves fuel economy not just in trucks, but in all vehicles. Driving a little smoother uses less gas, and is safer as well.

Grade Management

Watch the pyrometer when you’re climbing up a steep hill. Downshifting earlier in order to keep the boost and pyrometer low will let you climb the grade without having to floor it. If you see another hill coming up once you reach the crest, allow the truck to gain a little momentum while coming down the hill to give it a boost up the next hill. However, mountain grades require the use of low gear, and low speed, in order to maintain control.

Shell Expects Conventional Fuels to Stay on the Road

Wednesday, November 6th, 2013

Fossil fuels are a finite resource, and as such the demand for renewable energy sources is increasing. However, fuel giant Shell is predicting that while vehicles that run on renewable energy will increase, conventional fuels like diesel and gasoline are going to power the majority of vehicles for the a good part of the 21st century.

Richard Tucker, Shell’s General Manager for Technology for Commercial Fuels and Lubricants, said in a press event in Germany that two thirds of the vehicles on the road in 2050 are still going to be running on conventional fuels. He also stated that an additional 2 billion vehicles will be on the road by that time, which makes improving fuel economy and cutting emissions an important task. Shell is investing in both low viscosity oil, which can improve fuel economy in trucks, and gas-to-liquid, “which is a clean-burning, low-sulfur and very low-emissions fuel when converted to diesel,” according to Overdrive Online’s website. Check out the full story here.

What’s the Difference Between Diesel and Gasoline Fuel?

Friday, October 18th, 2013

Diesel and gasoline actually aren’t very different from each other. The main differences can be found in their consistency, and the type of engine they require to work.

Diesel and gasoline come from the same source, which is crude oil. Crude oil can be refined into different fuels with different consistencies. Diesel fuel is refined to a thicker, more oily consistency, while gasoline is refined to a lighter consistency. Gasoline is also more flammable than diesel, and requires less heat for combustion.

Because of their different characteristics, diesel and gasoline require different types of engines. Gas engines mix gas and air, making a vapor which is compressed by a piston, and then ignited by a spark plug. Diesel engines use a piston to compress air to a high pressure and temperature. When diesel is injected, it combusts due to the heat of the air.

Diesel engines are generally more fuel efficient because diesel is thicker than gasoline, which means it’s more energy-dense. Diesel combustion emits less carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide than gasoline combustion, but it also emits more particulate matter. Diesel engines are more expensive to build and to buy because of their high compression nature. Though the stereotypical image of diesel is of a dirty, black exhaust, advances in diesel refining techniques have improved the cleanliness of diesel significantly in recent years.
