Better fuel efficiency practices can save you big time at the pump.

Whether you’re a semi-truck driver or managing a fleet of trucks, minimizing your fuel costs can save you a ton of money. Gasoline and diesel costs add up quickly in an industry that relies on pickups, deliveries, and travel time. And since semi-trucks are so heavy, their fuel efficiency isn’t great to begin with. Semi-trucks only get about 6.5 miles per gallon on average. Here are a few tips that can save you at the pump. (more…)

Diesel fuel can get expensive when you run a fleet of freight trucks. Check out these fuel efficiency tips!

Improving the performance of a truck and freight truck fuel efficiency not only directly leads to lower costs over time, but can also contribute to lengthening the life of any vehicle. In trucking or haulage related businesses, a third of the running costs can be spent on fuel alone, this can lead to astronomical savings. This all comes down to several factors. The factors which decide whether or not peak freight truck fuel efficiency is achieved or not include: the habits of the driver, the quality of vehicle maintenance, and truck upgrades. The driver, however, makes the single biggest difference when it comes to freight truck fuel efficiency. (more…)

Diesel Prices

In the past couple of years as the nation continues to watch the price of fuel continue on its roller coaster, we have always found a trend. No matter the cost of gasoline, diesel fuel has always sat slightly above the cost of gas. The difference has never been by much, typically within a dollar range, but within the past couples the prices of gas have dropped reasonably with the price of diesel remaining the same.

Increasing Fuel Efficiency

Tuesday, July 29th, 2014

Summer Storm SafetyIf you’re in charge of a fleet of tractor-trailers or semi trucks in Baltimore, you’re probably always looking for ways to conserve fuel. By making small changes, you can increase fuel efficiency, allowing the trucks to run longer and smoother, and ultimately saving money within your company. Take a look at these 5 tips for increasing fuel efficiently in your Baltimore fleet.

  1. Oil changes. By using synthetic oil and high-capacity filters, there is less stress put on the engine. Synthetic oil also retains its lubrication abilities for a longer period of time, allowing your engine to run smoothly even in extreme temperatures.
  2. A high-flow exhaust system and a high-flow air filter. Let your motor breathe! If the exhaust systems haven’t been repaired after years of driving, it has probably accumulated rust and has been worn down. Have your trucks inspected to see if replacement of the muffler and pipes is necessary. By installing high-flow parts, you will increase the efficiency of the motor, and you probably won’t have to replace these parts again!
  3. Tires & tire pressure. Tire pressure should be checked often to make sure that there are no air leaks, which can affect fuel efficiency. Opposed to what some might think, bigger tires actually reduce fuel efficiency, so it is best to stay with a dependable all-weather light truck tire.
  4. Helper springs. To continue on the topic of tires and tire pressure, helper springs assist in the suspension of the tires. If too much pressure is put on the tires, the truck will have to work harder, which means more fuel is used. Helper springs will adjust to the weight or load of the truck, relieving the tires from being too worn down.
  5. Spark plugs. Keeping an eye on your spark plugs is important because the color of them can tell you a lot about your vehicle, and your engine in particular.  If they’re discolored, it could either mean that the truck is using too much fuel, or that it’s not using enough. When checking spark plugs, the O2 sensor should also be examined.

By following these tips, your Baltimore tractor-trailers and semi trucks will be more fuel efficient in no time. If you have any more questions about fuel efficiency, give Evan Transportation a call at 443-673-3365 or visit our contact page.

Diesel Fuel Price Falls After Sharp Increase

Friday, April 11th, 2014

Truckers across the country are breathing a sigh of relief as the price of diesel fuel continues to fall after several weeks of significant increases. “The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel fell again in the week ended April 7, down another 1.6 cents to $3.959, according to the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Asministration,” Overdrive Online reports. Since March 17th the price of diesel has fallen by 6.2 cents. In the 5 weeks leading up to March 16th, the price had skyrocketed by 14.4 cents.

Still, there are plenty of areas of the country where the price of diesel is more than $4 a gallon. The most expensive diesel in the country can be found in New England, at $4.24 a gallon. The cheapeast diesel? $3.793 in the Gulf Coast. Overall, the price of diesel is almost the same as it was this time last year, at 1.8 cents less expensive.

Would Cutting Fuel Consumption Benefit Consumers?

Thursday, February 6th, 2014

According to a new report released by the Consumer Federation of America, consumers would save money if trucks cut their fuel consumption. From overdriveonline.com, “The average U.S. household would save about $250 a year If medium and heavy-duty trucks in the U.S. cut their fuel consumption by 50 percent, according to a report released this week by the Consumer Federation of America.” These annual saves could increase to $400 by 2035. Cutting fuel consumption would mean improving fuel economy for trucks, a process which is slowly taking place as we see new trucks that are in the 9-10 mile per gallon range.

Americans households pay a little over $1,000 every year in truck fuel costs which are passed on to them on the store shelves. If fuel consumption was cut by 50 percent, savings across all U.S. households would total a whopping $29.5 billion. In turn, the report suggests that these savings could help generate activity in the U.S. economy as these saved dollars would go to other parts of the economy. Trucking companies would also see a benefit from reduced fuel costs. Read our blog on how truckers can improve their fuel economy through various driving techniques here.
