Smart Devices and Truck Drivers

Cargo theft jamming devicesIn today’s society, almost everyone has a smart device. While mobile phones are helpful and convenient in numerous situations, they can be a major source of distraction for truck drivers. In fact, they have become such an issue that the FMCSA has created new regulations to help cut down on smart devices being used by truck drivers.

These new regulations now prohibit using hand held smart devices and texting while a commercial vehicle is being operated on a major interstate. These regulations also state that being caught using a hand held smart device or texting can result in disqualifications and fines. However, these regulations are not applied to devices that are used fir dispatching. It is also important to know that hands free devices and options when using smart devices are typically acceptable. While many individual states have their own laws in place to handle smart devices, regulations in place by the FMCSA tend to overrule the state standards.

So why the regulations placed on smart devices?

Studies have shown that truck drivers who text on their mobile phones while driving are 23 more times as likely to be involved in accidents when compared to those who don’t. Truck drivers who are attempting to dial their mobile phones while driving are 6 times more likely to be involved in accidents when compared to drivers who use hand held devices or none at all.
