Let us take your oversized load safely to its destination.

Truck shipping remains the standard way to move packages large and small across land. Even strangely-shaped, bulky objects such as construction vehicles or equipment can use a trucking service to safely reach their destination. An oversized load is a freight category referring to loads that go beyond the standard height, depth, width, and sometimes weight of regular shipments. We’re discussing all about oversized loads right here. If you need an oversized load shipping service in the Mid-Atlantic region, call Evan Transportation.

What Is an Oversized Load?

An oversized load is a load that exceeds the legal maximum dimensions for road travel. The maximum width is generally 8.5 feet, the maximum length is 53 feet, and the maximum height is 13.5-14.5 feet. Any load that exceeds any of these dimensions is considered an oversized load.

Oversized Load Regulations

Regulations for shipping an oversized load vary by state, but you will generally run into the following types.

Permits

The state you intend to drive through may require that you get a permit to transport an oversized load before you enter or begin your journey. The permit may last for only a few days. For instance, the oversize load transportation permit in Maryland lasts for five days.

CDLs

While this may seem like a given, the truck driver must have a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL). Without this license, the driver is operating a truck illegally. There are also only so many ways a driver can confirm that they are capable of operating a truck safely.

Signage and Lights

Many states also require that the truckload bear oversized load banners, flags, and lights. Oversized loads are often identifiable by their yellow and black banners on the front and back of the truck bearing the words “OVERSIZED LOAD” in all capital letters. The signage must be removed when not in operation.

Escort Vehicles

In certain cases, an escort vehicle also bearing designated signage must trail the truckload for safety purposes. It is an extra measure that alerts others on the road of the need to drive around the truckload with caution.

Travel Time and Day Restrictions

States usually have laws prohibiting oversized load transportation on weekends and certain holidays. In Maryland, it is possible to drive day and night, excluding weekends (Saturday at noon onward) and major holidays.
