Is it semi-truck or semi-trailer? We answer this question and more.
If you aren’t familiar with the trucking industry, it’s okay. Most of us aren’t. However, being curious is a great thing, and Evan Transportation is here to answer your trucking industry questions, whether you are merely curious about this world or need trucking services. Let’s answer your first question: Is it semi-truck or semi-trailer?
Semi-Truck or Semi-Trailer: The Difference
A semi-truck is technically the vehicle itself, the engine, and the driver’s cab at the front of the truck. A truck will also have a trailer bed, which can be detached. A semi-trailer is the storage box that sits on the truck’s trailer bed. Semi-trailers can be uninsulated and carry general freight, or it could offer temperature control. Temperature-controlled semi-trailers are called reefer trailer.
Different Names for Big Trucks
Semi-trucks and trailers come in different types, as you can see above. Besides general freight haulers and reefers, you also have flatbed trucks, dry vans, and box vans.
Semi-trucks also differ in their cab types. You’ve got day cabs, which only have space for the driver and a passenger. You’ve also got sleeper cabs of different sizes and roof heights, some having one or two bunks and some storage, or an entire suite fit for OTR living.
We discuss these different types of semi-trucks and vans on our blog, along with much more information about trucks and the trucking industry.
A Little More about the Trucking World
Truckers either work as freelancers or as part of trucking companies like Evan Transportation. They can also work for companies that have their own trucking fleet. Truck drivers also work within a certain geographical range, namely local, regional, or OTR (over-the-road), which can mean national or international.
Truckers can take goods from point A to point B at any interval of the supply chain. They could take raw goods to the factory or finished products to the retail store or customer’s home. They can also deliver and pick up loads at ports, airports, and train stations, which is called intermodal trucking.
