While mobile storage containers ought to be in great condition, that doesn’t mean that they don’t need any maintenance. Unfortunately, it is not impossible for a commercial mobile storage unit to have odors. Here’s how to keep mobile storage containers from smelling.
Clean out the Mobile Storage Unit before Use
It is a good idea to clean the mobile storage unit once you receive it and before you put any inventory inside it. You could hose it down, mop it, and wash it down with a disinfectant to completely remove any dirt and bacteria that might be present. Allow the unit to dry and ventilate completely.
Remove Any Odors with Natural Products
If any strange or musty odors are present in the mobile storage unit, you can safely eliminate them by using any variety of natural ingredients. Setting out a bowl of baking soda, activated charcoal, or coffee grounds can sufficiently absorb foul odors. White vinegar can also be used as a deodorizing spray and then wiped off.
If the odors are caused by mold, mildew, or moisture leaks, you will need to address those issues separately with repairs and mold removal products.
Store Only Dry Goods
Do not store any items that give off moisture into the environment in a mobile storage container. If you do, they must be contained within a sealed compartment that will completely trap that moisture. The other option is to use well-ventilated storage containers and keep the mobile storage unit ventilated as well.
Store Items in Waterproof or Vacuum-Sealed Containers
To further protect your inventory from moisture or odor problems, you can store them in waterproof or vacuum-sealed containers. All of the inventory should be categorized, labeled, and accessible all the way to the back of the storage unit.
Ventilate the Mobile Storage Container
Mobile storage containers can benefit from routine airing out. You could run a fan or two within the unit to keep air flowing, and open the doors wide to let in fresh air now and then. Any lingering odors should leave, and mustiness should be kept at bay.
