Whichever kind you need, Evan Transportation can deliver with speed.
If you have a business or work in an industry where it has become so profitable that you need to purchase, rent, or hire out freight trucks to ship goods, you are in a good position indeed. The question now is which kind of trucking you need to ship your freight successfully and most affordably. Two of the most popular kinds are reefers and dry vans. What’s the difference? Below, we’ll discuss the differences between reefers vs. dry vans.
What Is a Reefer?
A reefer is a road trailer with a refrigeration component. It is able to manage temperature control for the insulated trailer. A reefer, also known as a refrigerated trailer, is great for transporting bulk quantities of items that need to be stored at colder temperatures. Fresh produce, like eggs, ice cream, and fruits, and pharmaceuticals benefit from transportation by reefer. Surprisingly, they can also store items that need to remain hot. Reefers can maintain internal temperatures from well below freezing to near 100 degrees Fahrenheit. If you need to ship perishable items, reefers are the best trailer option.
Refrigerated trailers typically cost more than dry vans and have a slightly smaller capacity. They may also require a little more maintenance, given the refrigeration unit.
What Is a Dry Van?
A dry van is a road trailer for general freight that does not require strict temperature control. Paper goods, furniture, electronics, clothing, and other equipment can safely travel in a dry van. If you imagine a typical semi-truck trailer, you are likely picturing a dry van. These trailers are also insulated, but naturally do not include the refrigeration unit.
Dry vans are an economical choice for most deliveries. They are cheaper to purchase, require a little less maintenance, and can hold up to 45,000 pounds, a few thousand pounds more than reefers can carry.
How to Tell Reefers and Dry Vans Apart
Reefer trailers are usually taller and have a visible refrigeration unit on the front or back end.
On the other hand, dry vans are usually shorter and narrower, or do not feature the refrigeration unit.
