Steps to Become a Trucker
Have a Regular Driver’s License
The first step of becoming a trucker is to have a regular driver’s license. One should already have a proven track record of safe driving. With this license, a future trucker can get a headstart by driving delivery trucks.
Be “Of Age”
The main goal for a trucker in training is to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL.) One must be at least 21 years old to pass the CDL test. However, it is possible to get a learner’s permit as early as at 18 years old.
Achieve Educational Requirements
One must also have a minimum education of a high school diploma or a GED. A GED is a Graduate Equivalency Degree or General Education Degree. One must look at their state’s requirements for obtaining a GED. In Maryland, one can enroll in classes and be ready for the certificate in as little as six weeks.
Complete Training for CDL
If you have a regular driver’s license, are at least 21 years old, and have a high school diploma or GED, you qualify for truck driving training. One can find training in various venues, including private truck driving schools, community colleges, and company-sponsored programs. Training can be as short as a few weeks or as long as a year.
Obtain CDL & Other Essentials
The next step is to obtain the CDL. One decides which classification to test for, the classifications being a, b, and c. A trucker might also need endorsements if he or she is driving a specialty vehicle, like a school bus.
Find Employment
Various truck driving associations can help pair new truckers with employers. Some truck driving schools also provide career counseling. Truckers are on their way to a great career!
