Around this time of year, it isn’t uncommon to have to drive in the fog. When seasons change, fog will frequently occur, which can become a massive safety issue to truck drivers or anyone driving for that matter. Due to fog being able to happen at any given moment while driving and impairing your vision, you’ll need to know how to adjust to navigating through these types of weather conditions quickly. In this blog, you’ll learn how to drive your truck safely through fog weather conditions. Continue reading!

Drive Slowly

Even if you consider yourself an experienced truck driver, it’s essential to slow down. You never know if the fog you are driving through is fog “masking” a car accident in front of you, which could then delay you from reacting promptly to keep you and your vehicle safe.

Use Your Low-Beam Headlights & Fog Lights

You’ll want to ensure to turn on your lights during daytime fog as well. This will help you stay alert for other drivers on the road who’ve forgotten to use their lights to navigate. Your vehicle needs to be seen!

Unless Necessary Don’t Change Lanes

When driving in the fog, you want to go with caution, meaning you shouldn’t abruptly change lanes. For instance, there could be a mountain, hill, boulder, or anything else that could block your vision from seeing opposing headlights. In all, you want to remain calm and patient with vehicles ahead of you because they may be driving at a slower pace than you.

Stay Off The Road If Fog Is Heavy

If you cannot see anything surrounding you before you get on the road, make sure you wait before driving. You don’t want to put your life or anyone else’s at risk, so if you can avoid being on the road until the fog clears up, you absolutely should!

Don’t Drive Faster Than Your Reaction Time & Vision

This is especially important for truck drivers that have longer stopping distances. So, you’ll want to adjust your speed to what you can see around you. Driving too fast can delay your reaction time and limit your vision, putting you at a high risk of getting into an accident.
