The Process of Truck Shipping

Let’s walk through the truck shipping process, step by step.

Truck shipping still remains the most fundamental way for goods to reach different destinations, such as homes, retail centers, government agencies, and healthcare facilities, safely and efficiently. If you are in a business that requires the transportation of bulk goods, whether they are frozen items, oversized equipment, or uniform products, you will likely need to familiarize yourself with truck shipping. Learn about the process of truck shipping below, and give Evan Transportation a call if you need delivery services in the Mid-Atlantic region.

From Quote to Pickup

Get Free Quotes

The first step is to research different trucking companies that work within your delivery area. You could research online, get referrals, or both. It’s best to get at least one free quote and confirm the company’s qualifications before settling on one.

Prepare the Shipment

Figure out what kind of shipping method would work best for you and how much volume is needed to transport your load. Know the freight’s volume and weight and prepare the load for shipment accordingly.

Secure a Bill of Lading upon Booking

When you book a truck shipping service, you will get a bill of lading, a type of receipt for the shipment that you will need to keep until its completion at least. The truck driver with your shipment will have another copy of the bill of lading.

Schedule the Pickup

Secure the scheduled pickup time for your load. Be ready to give the truck driver access to your load at the right location (dock or liftgate) well before the trucker arrives.

From Pickup to Dropoff

Pick up the Freight

The trucker will arrive at your location on the set time and day, scan the shipment, and sign the bill of lading. He will also load the freight onto the truck securely and begin the trip to its destination.

Track the Shipment

The truck driver will take the most efficient and well-informed route to your shipment’s destination. If you choose LTL shipping, the trucker will likely need to make stops along the way to drop off other clients’ shipments at different locations. You should be able to track the shipment along the way.

Receive the Delivery

When the trucker arrives at the destination, the receiver will inspect the freight and sign the Proof of Delivery (POD), and your shipment will be ready for its next phase.
