The Fourth of July isn’t just a day-long celebration, or even just an evening of fireworks. While people across the United States will count July 4th as a day to celebrate their country’s independence, would-be commercial cargo thieves may also be on the loose. It is not a call to be scared, but to be aware and prepared for cargo theft prevention for Fourth of July.

July 4th Holiday at Highest Risk of Cargo Theft

July 1-7 is a risky time for the supply chain every year. While you might expect the biggest thefts to occur on July 4th, warehouses, distribution centers, and semi-trucks are actually the most at risk between July 1st and 3rd. The risk of cargo theft is highest in California, Texas, and Illinois, but the risk is present in Maryland and other states as well, resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars lost. According to Verisk CargoNet, the types of cargo thieves target most are food, household goods, and electronics.

Why Is Early July at High Risk of Cargo Theft?

Fourth of July celebrations can alter hours of operation for many businesses, including warehouses, manufacturing sites, and retail centers. With these changed hours and the likely absence of security professionals, thieves are more likely to risk breaking into a semi-truck or facility to take from high-volume supplies. It is also possible that the hot weather makes it easier to go out than freezing weather.

How to Prevent Cargo Theft during the Fourth of July

It is inevitable for hours of operation to change and people to take a break for the holidays. However, the challenge remains to achieve successful cargo theft protection for Fourth of July. Other security measures, such as high-security locks, access control systems, security lighting, and security cameras, should be in place at all times in warehousing, manufacturing, and retail centers.

Business owners should also keep close and clear communication with truckers and the local police to ensure shipments arrive during operating hours and police are present to catch any suspicious activity early. Should loaded semi-trucks need to park temporarily during the holiday, it is best to keep them secure as well and back them up against a solid wall if possible.

Yet another option is commercial self storage, which businesses can use to house inventory of all kinds with the help of robust commercial security features.
