Weigh Stations

Anyone who has ever traveled any significant distance on a major highway has probably passed by a weigh station. While weigh stations are commonly found throughout the nation, many aren’t familiar with how they operate or what their purpose is.

Choosing the Tractor Trailer for your Freight

Monday, November 24th, 2014

When choosing the right tractor trailer for your freight shipment, you may want to ask, “What are my tractor trailer options?” and “how do I know this is the best option for my freight shipment?” These are good questions, but when choosing a tractor-trailer you should also take things like budget, timeline, and what you’re shipping into consideration.

Let’s say you’re transporting cars, for example. If you’re transporting high-end cars, you may want to choose an enclosed car transport over open transport for greater protection. An open transport means the car sits on an open trailer pulled by a car or truck.

Freight options

If you’re transporting multiple cars, you’ll want to look into multi-car, double-level tractor-trailers. These are technically open transport tractor-trailers, but they allow you to carry more cars over more distance.  However, they also have their downfall. Because they are carrying such a large load, these tractor-trailers are slower and can’t navigate well in residential areas.

If you’re looking for a faster option, look into one-level multi-car trailers. These trailers can carry about 2 or 3 cars at a time, and although they are more expensive, the driver can easily navigate through all needed areas.

Before you choose just any tractor-trailer for your freight, be sure to do your research. Ask yourself the questions mentioned above, and see what your needs and wants are for your freight shipment. If you have questions about choosing a tractor-trailer for your freight, contact Evan Transportation.

What Makes a Reliable Freight Company?

Friday, November 14th, 2014

With so many options for freight companies, it can be hard to determine which companies are more beneficial than others. When it comes to choosing a freight company, it’s important to keep in mind what makes a successful and prominent freight company like Evan Transportation.

freight company

A major indication of the reliability of a freight company is their willingness to give times regarding your freight pickup and delivery. A freight company should never avoid giving you an expected pick up and arrival time for your freight shipment. If they fail to provide a time, it usually means they never arrive at the time they do provide, meaning they are usually unreliable. Another indication of the freight company is the rates they provide. While everyone is looking for a bargain in today’s tough economy, extremely low rates can indicate the inability of a company to handle emergencies or the quality of their service.

You want to be able to trust the driver who is transporting your freight. This means that if any issues should arise during the transportation process, your driver should discuss the matter with you. A driver who is unwilling to discuss problems with you is a driver that should probably not be trusted with your freight. While having an open line of communication with your driver is important, an open line of communication with the freight office is even more imperative. Should a problem or question arise regarding your freight, it should never be a problem to reach the freight office. You should never feel as though your freight company is keeping anything from you regarding your freight shipment.

Tractor Trailer Options for Freight

Thursday, September 4th, 2014

Tractor Trailer OptionsWhen you have freight that needs to be shipped, one truck doesn’t always fit all freight. There are several tractor trailer options available for freight transportation.  Some freight items don’t need any extra care during transportation, while food and other freight items might require specific temperatures during transportation. Other items may be too large to fit in one tractor trailer versus another. Before you transport your freight, you must first observe the items you are shipping. Based on your freight, you can then make an educated decision about which tractor trailer to use in your situation.

Tractor Trailer Options

  1. Box Truck- This tractor trailer option is commonly used when transporting furniture, large boxes, and large appliances. Furniture companies favor these types of trucks that come in a variety of sizes. The cargo area is separate from the truck and sits on a frame.
  2. Refrigerated Trailer- The trailer of this truck has the ability to be set at a lower temperature than the rest of the truck. The cargo area of the tuck can be cooled by either carbon dioxide agents or a small diesel engine to ensure the freight stays at the appropriate temperature.
  3. Flat Bed- The cargo area on a flatbed truck is open and on a completely flat surface. Freight that is larger in size or heavier in weight can be transported by a flat bed, along with freight that can be exposed to varying weather conditions.
  4. Semi-Trailer- Normally known as an 18 wheeler, semi-trailers are commonly found on busy highways. This tractor trailer option is used to ship LTL and FTL loads.

Increasing Fuel Efficiency

Tuesday, July 29th, 2014

Summer Storm SafetyIf you’re in charge of a fleet of tractor-trailers or semi trucks in Baltimore, you’re probably always looking for ways to conserve fuel. By making small changes, you can increase fuel efficiency, allowing the trucks to run longer and smoother, and ultimately saving money within your company. Take a look at these 5 tips for increasing fuel efficiently in your Baltimore fleet.

  1. Oil changes. By using synthetic oil and high-capacity filters, there is less stress put on the engine. Synthetic oil also retains its lubrication abilities for a longer period of time, allowing your engine to run smoothly even in extreme temperatures.
  2. A high-flow exhaust system and a high-flow air filter. Let your motor breathe! If the exhaust systems haven’t been repaired after years of driving, it has probably accumulated rust and has been worn down. Have your trucks inspected to see if replacement of the muffler and pipes is necessary. By installing high-flow parts, you will increase the efficiency of the motor, and you probably won’t have to replace these parts again!
  3. Tires & tire pressure. Tire pressure should be checked often to make sure that there are no air leaks, which can affect fuel efficiency. Opposed to what some might think, bigger tires actually reduce fuel efficiency, so it is best to stay with a dependable all-weather light truck tire.
  4. Helper springs. To continue on the topic of tires and tire pressure, helper springs assist in the suspension of the tires. If too much pressure is put on the tires, the truck will have to work harder, which means more fuel is used. Helper springs will adjust to the weight or load of the truck, relieving the tires from being too worn down.
  5. Spark plugs. Keeping an eye on your spark plugs is important because the color of them can tell you a lot about your vehicle, and your engine in particular.  If they’re discolored, it could either mean that the truck is using too much fuel, or that it’s not using enough. When checking spark plugs, the O2 sensor should also be examined.

By following these tips, your Baltimore tractor-trailers and semi trucks will be more fuel efficient in no time. If you have any more questions about fuel efficiency, give Evan Transportation a call at 443-673-3365 or visit our contact page.

Truck Exhaust System Maintenance

Friday, July 25th, 2014

Exhaust Systems

When it comes to common truck repairs that need to be handled, exhaust systems are one of them. The exhaust system of your truck can be one of the most vulnerable systems throughout your truck. If a truck driver realizes the warning signs of a faulty or failing exhaust system, repairs can be made quickly to prevent serious damage. Some ways that truck drivers can help their exhaust systems include:

  • Be observant of smoke being released by your exhaust system. If the smoke being released is billowing and seems thicker than normal, there is more than likely a problem with your exhaust system.
  • Listen to your truck as it runs. If you happen to hear a loud rumbling or rattling noise, your muffler could be faulty and in need of replacement.
  • Make it part of your routine to check your muffler for rust and holes. Holes in your muffler could allow carbon monoxide to escape, providing a possibly fatal situation. Rust could allow your muffler to break during a commute.
  • Place the components of your exhaust system away from different elements of your vehicle like the fuel and breaks.
  • Consider upgrading your exhaust system. A high flow exhaust system allows your motor to breath easier and can also increase the fuel efficiency of your truck.

Being aware of your the different components and systems throughout your truck will allow you to keep your truck running smoothly and efficiently. At Evan Transportation, our truck drivers and trained staff are always aware of the condition their truck is in. They use similar techniques in order to keep their truck running smoothly and efficiently to get the job done.

Higher Truck Fuel Efficiency Standards Coming

Friday, February 21st, 2014

Fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas standards for semi-trucks will be higher for all post-2018 year model trucks. After introducing new fuel efficiency standards for trucks manufactured from 2014-2018, President Obama announced the new standards for post-218 trucks in an effort to further improve fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from semi-trucks. While trucks only accounted for 4% of vehicles registered in the U.S., they produced about 25% of greenhouses gasses produced by vehicles, and consumed 25% of the fuel.

According to the president’s announcement, the current standards from 2014-2018 will “save the trucking industry $50 billion and save 530 million barrels of oil. The next round will save the average truck owner $73,000 in the typical lifetime of a truck.” The EPA and DOT are expected to create the new standards by March 2015 and implement them by March 2016.

Axle Configuration Key To Fuel Efficiency?

Wednesday, January 22nd, 2014

The classic axle configuration for semi trucks is a 6×4 setup. New tests, however, suggest that the less common 6×2 setup may help improve fuel efficiency and save drivers money.

According to overdriveonline.com, the Carbon War room initiative and the North American Council for Freight Efficiency have worked together to produce new information comparing the fuel efficiency of 6×2 and 6×4 tractor axle setups. The two organizations reviewed existing literature and also performed their own tests to compare the fuel efficiency of the two axle set-ups. The tests showed better efficiency with the 6×2 setup, which varied from an increase of 1.6 percent to an increase of 4.6 percent. Therefore, “NACFE concluded an average 2.5 percent could be expected for many fleets with a conversion to a 6×2 configuration.” In addition, the average fleet could expect a payback on its investment in 20 months, a little less than 2 years.

You can find the summary of the report, which also reports on the effects of speed limiting technologies and wide-single tires on fuel efficiency, here on Overdrive Online’s website. According to the report, wide-single tires resulted in a gain of between 3-6 percent fuel efficiency.

Tips For Safe Winter Truck Driving

Thursday, December 5th, 2013

Winter weather can bring dangerous road conditions that make safe driving even more of a priority. While you can control the weather, you can control how you prepare for it. Here are some tips for truckers that will help with preparation for winter weather.

Start Planning Before Winter

When the weather is good take note of safe places to park and places to chain up and chain off. Keep these locations in the back of your mind, or better yet, write them down, so when you need to make an emergency stop you know where you can go.

Monitor the Weather

These days you can use lots of different sources to keep tabs on the weather, from your radio to your smartphone. Check the forecast before you go and make a plan for your trip. If snow is in the forecast, calculate your speed at 25mph in order to avoid running out of driving hours or hitting them before you can get to a safe spot. You can only take advantage of the “extra two hours of driving for unforeseen traffic or weather” if it is unforeseen. If you knew about bad weather ahead, use of these hours won’t fly with DOT.

Pre-Trip and En Route Inspections

Make sure all lights work and are clean. Draining air from the truck’s tanks and trailers will reduce the chance of condensation building up in the air lines and freezing your brakes. Make sure you have the proper equipment for chaining in bad weather conditions and personal equipment to keep you warm if you’re waiting for a tow.

Know Your Limits

Safety is the best policy. If you’re inexperienced with the weather conditions ahead, better to pull over and wait for the plows and salt trucks to come through. Or look for a mentor with more experience who can guide you through.

Are Driverless Trucks on the Way?

Thursday, November 21st, 2013

There’s been plenty of buzz about driverless cars recently, but not as much about driverless trucks. However, some think that driverless trucks could actually be the first generation of driverless vehicles, as opposed to passenger vehicles. Furthermore, both types of autonomous vehicles could be closer than we think. According to Overdrive Online, “They could be available to motorists in 10-20 years, according to Rep. Tom Petri (D-Wis.), chairman of the House’s Highways and Transit Subcommittee, which heard testimony Nov. 19 on autonomous vehicles and what Congress should do to prepare.” Petri also stated that the advantages of autonomous vehicles include safety, easing congestion, and more efficient use of infrastructure.

However, the term autonomous may be a little misleading. Fully-automated vehicles that drive passengers to a destination with little or human input are a long way off, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration administrator David Strickland. However, the alleged benefits of these vehicles are definitely spurring significant research and development into the field. While autonomous trucks are estimated to cost a lot more off the bat than conventional trucks, Peter Conway of Booz & Company predicts that usage savings could be around $100,000 annually. However, the truck itself could exceed $200,000, not including the tractor or trailer.
