It’s easy to stay updated on your truck shipments every step of the way.
As a company owner or manager who needs to use truck shipping services once, seasonally, or regularly, you will want to know the status of your freight shipment every step of the way. It’s best to be in the know at all times where your freight is in general. Tracking freight shipments, whether they be bulk goods, refrigerated items, or oversized equipment, isn’t quite the same as tracking an online delivery to your home. Here is a quick guide on how to track freight shipments. If you have any questions, Evan Transportation in the Mid-Atlantic region is happy to help.
Get a Shipping Number from Your Provider
You will receive a shipping tracking number for your truck shipping provider. The number will be physically on your freight package, along with a barcode, and should be on your copy of the Bill of Lading as well. This number is called the BOL number.
On the other hand, you can create and use a PRO number to track shipments. A PRO number is assigned by the carrier rather than the shipper and is directly used for tracking shipments. The PRO number is also found on the Bill of Lading.
Use an App to Keep Track of Shipping Updates
Either your truck shipping company or a third-party freight tracking company will allow you to use a website, app, or both to look up your freight’s shipping status. For third parties, all you have to do is enter your BOL or PRO number, and the current information should appear.
Work with a Company That Keeps You Updated
Your outsourced freight shipping company may also send you updates regarding your shipment and expected delivery times, whether there are multiple points in the journey or just one destination. If you outsource a trucking company rather than use your own truckers, it’s important to work with a company that will keep you informed accurately and as often as needed.
Keep Track of All Your Truck Shipping Documents
It’s important to keep all physical and digital freight shipping documents organized and in a safe, easy-to-reach place. Even after the shipment is complete, it’s best to store records safely. If you lose your Bill of Lading, your trucking company should be able to give you another copy.
