Making sure you get a chance to move around outside the truck can help keep your blood pressure low.

A frequent concern of commercial drivers involves whether or not they will pass the DOT physical exam with high blood pressure. Drivers who have high blood pressure can be medically certified to drive, so long as their blood pressure remains below 140/90. If your blood pressure rises above 140/90 you will have to get recertified on a more frequent basis, and are automatically disqualified from driving if your blood pressure reaches above 180/110. Drivers can reduce their blood pressure either through use of medication or by changing lifestyle choices. (more…)

Department of Transportation Proposing New Speed Limit Rule on Freightliners

There may soon be speed limiters controlling how fast truckers can drive.

The Obama administration recently proposed a rule that would have truckers use a device on their rigs that would limit their top speed. Proposed in combination by the Transportation Department’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the agencies would like to cap maximum truck speeds at 60, 65, and 68 miles per hour. Regulators claim the measure would save lives and more than $1 billion in annual fuel costs. (more…)
