Importance of CDL for Truckers

A CDL is something you want your truckers to have. Here’s why.

Truck driving remains a popular industry that attracts a broad range of people. This fact is one of the things that makes truck driving so great, but it can also mean that some people are attracted to it looking for an easy job, which is not the case! Unfortunately, recently there have been multiple cases of truck drivers who do not have a CDL taking to the road. Legally, you are required to have one. Beyond that, what is the real importance of CDL for truckers?

You Know Your Stuff

Would you rather hire an electrician who is licensed or unlicensed? If you are like most people, you answered ‘licensed.’ That’s because licensing is one way to confirm the knowledge of the person you are hiring. In the same way, part of the importance of CDL training for truckers is knowing that the truck driver knows what they are doing. You have proof that they went through all of the coursework, testing, and training that goes into safely operating a commercial vehicle.

You Have the Skills

While knowledge is an important piece of the equation, another part of it is basic skills. Part of the importance of CDL training is verifying that you are actually able to walk the walk and not just talk to talk. During your CDL test, the trainer will ensure that you can safely and efficiently operate a commercial vehicle. This test is for your safety, the safety of the cargo you’re carrying, and the safety of everyone on the road.

You Are Healthy

It might surprise you to know that part of the importance of CDL training for truckers is also to ensure that all commercial truck drivers are able to satisfy the health requirements of the job. Truck driving might not seem very hard, but in reality, it is incredibly physically difficult. You need to be able to drive safely at all hours of the day. You must have at least 20/40 vision in each eye with or without lenses. Your blood pressure must be within certain guidelines. You also must not have cardiovascular disease and must be able to sit for long periods of time. Trucker health is another assurance that a CDL gives.
