Make Sure You Pack For The Weather

Even though you’ll be driving comfortably in the cab of the truck, that way, if a tire happens to blow out or you need to go outside for any maintenance work, you’ll be prepared. Your packing list should include extra socks, gloves, blankets, and a hat. Doing so will help you combat the cold weather.

Have Safe Driving Space

During the winter season, you must increase your following distance. So be sure you have plenty of space to allow yourself to stop and maneuver around unexpected traffic situations.

Keep A Firm Grip On Your Wheel

This one should be pretty obvious because it’s the most important thing you can do when you’re on the road. You, see gripping your steering wheel firmly will help you to maintain control of your vehicle. Therefore, keep both of your hands on the wheel to guide your truck through snow and ice.

Don’t Use The Jake Brake During Icy Conditions

You see, using the compression release engine brake, otherwise known as the Jake brake, releases air that’s compressed in the cylinders and will stop the brake immediately, which will cause the rig to skid across the ice if the roads are slippery enough. Therefore you’ll want to put your truck into a lower gear and ensure that you use regular friction brakes to maximize your overall safety.

Use Your Headlights

Using your headlights doesn’t just promote your safety when driving at night. You want to be sure you can see what is in your surroundings, such as deer running around during this time of year. Your headlights will help you stay alert and spot things before it’s too late.
