While it sounds rather simple, the delivery of oversized loads can be a complicated and risky process. Both trucking contractors and their clients should understand some important considerations for this type of transportation service.
Legal and Physical Limits
The first thing to understand when hauling normal-sized loads is the legal limits for shipments. The appropriate information is well documented and consistent across the United States. Generally speaking, the maximum load width and height are both 102 inches. The maximum length varies but is typically around 50 feet. Each state and jurisdiction may have its own load limits. Be sure to do your research before going on your route. Anything outside the bounds of these measurements is considered an oversized load. Lastly, many states require the delivery of oversized loads only to take place during the day. This means trucks of oversized loads and their escorts have strict times when they must be off the road.
Now that you understand the legal guidelines, it’s time to make sure your load is physically able to be delivered. Weight limits are based on the axle and not the total weight of the load. Sometimes simply altering the position of the oversized load can satisfy the limit. It may actually remove the oversized attribute for a load if the altered position breaks up the package sufficiently.
