Truck driving is a well-known but elusive job; you see semi-trucks of all sizes on the roads, but it is but a glimpse of what the truck driving life is like. Our culture has many ideas of what characterizes this job and its workers, but are they true? Are you aware of these truck driving myths?
Truck Driving Is Low-Paid
One truck driving myth is that truckers get paid very little. It may come from the idea that desk jobs make the most money, but this is far from the truth. Truckers can make a very decent wage, with OTR truckers making the highest salary. In Maryland, the average trucker salary in 2023 is in the $50k range.
Truck Drivers Are Unhealthy
Another stereotype is that truck drivers are all overweight or unhealthy. After all, how can you stay fit when you have to drive for long period of time? It would be the same as how you stay fit sitting at a desk all day. Truckers also must be physically, mentally, and emotionally fit to drive a truck at all. Fitness is required for the job!
Truck Drivers Are Lonely
If you sit in a truck all day, traversing the roads, it might seem like a very lonely job. The truth is that truckers get to meet many other people as they load and unload trucks, meet others on the road, and meet other truckers. That is one of the perks of the job! On top of that, team truck drivers travel in pairs and keep each other company.
AI Can Replace Truckers
Many have wondered and marveled at the idea that artificial intelligence can take over everyone’s jobs, truck drivers included. The truth is that it would be a very long time until robots could be trusted to haul truckloads, if ever, and truckers do a lot more work besides driving that would be hard to automate, such as tying down loads, keeping a log book, etc.
Only Men Drive Semi-Trucks
Not so. Women also have jobs in the trucking industry as truckers, behind-the-scenes work, and executives. If you are a woman who is interested in the trucking business, there is room for you to join!
Truckers Are Never Home
