Maryland: The Top Motor Vehicle Enforcement State

Friday, October 24th, 2014

Motor Vehicle EnforcementMotor vehicle enforcement along with truck inspections are an important part of vehicle and road safety across the nation. Without motor vehicle enforcement, truck drivers would have the ability to ignore safety codes and traffic laws, making the road dangerous. Recently, the American Transportation Research Institute released a report entitled “Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement- Top 10 High-Performance States.” The report ranks the states on a point system spanning over eleven main criteria areas. Maryland was proudly ranked number 1 in this report, while also ranking number 1 in the level of inspection intensity, a report made by Overdrive Magazine. Maryland received such a ranking from Overdrive because of their rate of inspection per lane-mile of interstate within their state borders. The Maryland inspection rate was three times that of the national average of state inspections.

Motor Vehicle Enforcement Criteria

The following criteria areas were used by the American Transportation Research Institute to determine the ranking of states in motor vehicle enforcement. All criteria are based per million vehicle miles traveled.

  1. Fatal Crashes
  2. Overall Crashes
  3. Roadside Inspections
  4. Clean Inspections- Inspections without violation
  5. Overall Violations
  6. Out of Service Violations
  7. Red Flag Violations
  8. Traffic Enforcement Stops
  9. Violations During Traffic Enforcement Stops
  10. Crash Predictor Violations
  11. State Funds Expended per Federal Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program Funds

What Makes a Professional Truck Driver?

Friday, October 17th, 2014

Professional Truck DriverDriving a large tractor trailer takes skill and patience. While there are plenty truck drivers available throughout the nation, there are some jobs that require a professional truck driver. When your business is relying on a freight shipment to arrive at a specific time, a professional truck driver is the best person to turn to. At Evan Transportation, we hire professional truck drivers to ensure freight entrusted to us is shipped in a manner that is safe, efficient, and quick. So what exactly makes a professional truck driver?

Professional Truck Driver Traits

  1. Focus- A professional truck driver is focused on his truck only. He will avoid any distractions within the cab of his truck, including cell phones, food, and unnecessary passengers. While paying attention to surroundings is important when driving, a professional truck driver will avoid becoming involved with another driver and how they are managing their job.
  2. Safe- A professional truck driver never sacrifices safety when shipping freight. This means they never engage in aggressive driving behaviors, no matter what the circumstance is. A professional truck driver will never get behind the wheel when feeling fatigued, and will know when to pull over should they meet inclement or severe weather.
  3. Professional- There are drivers that sometimes let the road get the better of them. This means they will engage with aggressive drivers who feel the need to cut off or out run truck drivers on the road. While it may be easy to “teach” a lesson to other drivers, a professional truck driver never takes part in such behavior.
  4. Attentive- Being attentive is crucial when shipping freight in a tractor trailer or large semi-truck. A professional truck driver will always check the weather and traffic reports before leaving for his destination. This allows them to be aware of possible poor weather and congested traffic areas.

Tractor Trailer Options for Freight

Thursday, September 4th, 2014

Tractor Trailer OptionsWhen you have freight that needs to be shipped, one truck doesn’t always fit all freight. There are several tractor trailer options available for freight transportation.  Some freight items don’t need any extra care during transportation, while food and other freight items might require specific temperatures during transportation. Other items may be too large to fit in one tractor trailer versus another. Before you transport your freight, you must first observe the items you are shipping. Based on your freight, you can then make an educated decision about which tractor trailer to use in your situation.

Tractor Trailer Options

  1. Box Truck- This tractor trailer option is commonly used when transporting furniture, large boxes, and large appliances. Furniture companies favor these types of trucks that come in a variety of sizes. The cargo area is separate from the truck and sits on a frame.
  2. Refrigerated Trailer- The trailer of this truck has the ability to be set at a lower temperature than the rest of the truck. The cargo area of the tuck can be cooled by either carbon dioxide agents or a small diesel engine to ensure the freight stays at the appropriate temperature.
  3. Flat Bed- The cargo area on a flatbed truck is open and on a completely flat surface. Freight that is larger in size or heavier in weight can be transported by a flat bed, along with freight that can be exposed to varying weather conditions.
  4. Semi-Trailer- Normally known as an 18 wheeler, semi-trailers are commonly found on busy highways. This tractor trailer option is used to ship LTL and FTL loads.

Evan Transportation was founded in 1992 by Jerry Wolfarth, who at the time had over 25 years of experience in the trucking and transportation industry. Increasing Fuel Efficiency

Tuesday, July 29th, 2014

Summer Storm SafetyIf you’re in charge of a fleet of tractor-trailers or semi trucks in Baltimore, you’re probably always looking for ways to conserve fuel. By making small changes, you can increase fuel efficiency, allowing the trucks to run longer and smoother, and ultimately saving money within your company. Take a look at these 5 tips for increasing fuel efficiently in your Baltimore fleet.

  1. Oil changes. By using synthetic oil and high-capacity filters, there is less stress put on the engine. Synthetic oil also retains its lubrication abilities for a longer period of time, allowing your engine to run smoothly even in extreme temperatures.
  2. A high-flow exhaust system and a high-flow air filter. Let your motor breathe! If the exhaust systems haven’t been repaired after years of driving, it has probably accumulated rust and has been worn down. Have your trucks inspected to see if replacement of the muffler and pipes is necessary. By installing high-flow parts, you will increase the efficiency of the motor, and you probably won’t have to replace these parts again!
  3. Tires & tire pressure. Tire pressure should be checked often to make sure that there are no air leaks, which can affect fuel efficiency. Opposed to what some might think, bigger tires actually reduce fuel efficiency, so it is best to stay with a dependable all-weather light truck tire.
  4. Helper springs. To continue on the topic of tires and tire pressure, helper springs assist in the suspension of the tires. If too much pressure is put on the tires, the truck will have to work harder, which means more fuel is used. Helper springs will adjust to the weight or load of the truck, relieving the tires from being too worn down.
  5. Spark plugs. Keeping an eye on your spark plugs is important because the color of them can tell you a lot about your vehicle, and your engine in particular.  If they’re discolored, it could either mean that the truck is using too much fuel, or that it’s not using enough. When checking spark plugs, the O2 sensor should also be examined.

By following these tips, your Baltimore tractor-trailers and semi trucks will be more fuel efficient in no time. If you have any more questions about fuel efficiency, give Evan Transportation a call at 443-673-3365 or visit our contact page.

At Evan Transportation, we employ staff and drivers with years of trucking experience who know the industry well in order to better serve our customers. Truck Exhaust System Maintenance

Friday, July 25th, 2014

Exhaust Systems

When it comes to common truck repairs that need to be handled, exhaust systems are one of them. The exhaust system of your truck can be one of the most vulnerable systems throughout your truck. If a truck driver realizes the warning signs of a faulty or failing exhaust system, repairs can be made quickly to prevent serious damage. Some ways that truck drivers can help their exhaust systems include:

  • Be observant of smoke being released by your exhaust system. If the smoke being released is billowing and seems thicker than normal, there is more than likely a problem with your exhaust system.
  • Listen to your truck as it runs. If you happen to hear a loud rumbling or rattling noise, your muffler could be faulty and in need of replacement.
  • Make it part of your routine to check your muffler for rust and holes. Holes in your muffler could allow carbon monoxide to escape, providing a possibly fatal situation. Rust could allow your muffler to break during a commute.
  • Place the components of your exhaust system away from different elements of your vehicle like the fuel and breaks.
  • Consider upgrading your exhaust system. A high flow exhaust system allows your motor to breath easier and can also increase the fuel efficiency of your truck.

Being aware of your the different components and systems throughout your truck will allow you to keep your truck running smoothly and efficiently. At Evan Transportation, our truck drivers and trained staff are always aware of the condition their truck is in. They use similar techniques in order to keep their truck running smoothly and efficiently to get the job done.

Benefits of Using a Tractor Trailer Company

Benefits of Tractor Trailers

When it comes to transporting freight, businesses have several options on how they want to do so. Freight can be shipped using airplanes, ships, trains, and tractor trailers. Some may think that a train or ship is the best way to transport your freight, but these modes of transportation take more time and money than using a trucking company. A trucking company that uses tractor trailers or semi-trucks is one of the easiest ways to transport your freight today.

Using a company like Evan Transportation has its benefits like:

  1. Easy Repairs- If a truck runs into trouble and needs to stop traveling, a new truck can easily be sent out to finish the route. While the new truck is delivering the freight, the first truck can be repaired. Fixing a malfunction on a ship or train will halt your shipment completely and cost a large amount of money to fix.
  2. Easy Loading- Trucks can be easily loaded within a few hours before heading out to their destination. Ships, airplanes, and trains can take a full day to load before they can leave for their destination.
  3. Easy Routes- In today’s age, highway systems throughout the states make transportation easy and direct. Trucks are able to travel to both small towns and large cities to deliver a shipment rather than being limited to certain ports or stops.

Evan Transportation has been delivering freight to the Mid-Atlantic region since it was founded in 1992. We offer a trained staff with years in the trucking and transportation industry that ensures our customers excellent and unmatched customer service.  We offer transportation for a number of products that include:

  1. Food and Beverages
  2. Paper Products
  3. Retail
  4. Steel
  5. Lumber

Safety on the Roads this Summer Season

Friday, May 23rd, 2014

Trucker Safety TipsOver the past several weeks, tractor trailers have been in the evening news. Sadly, the reasoning behind their evening debuts isn’t for something positive, but due to accidents involving tractor trailers. On April 15th, around 10:30pm, a tractor trailer was reported overturned on the ramp heading from Interstate 895 going to Route 295 in Lansdowne. The driver was retrieved from the truck and flown to Shock Trauma, but there has been no word on the driver’s condition. Then, just yesterday, a tractor trailer crash took place on Interstate 95 northbound. The accident took place in Arbutus near the Howard/Baltimore County line and caused traffic jams within the area.

The latest crash unfortunately involved a pedestrian car, and more crashes will most likely take place with the summer season approaching. To prevent these types of accidents, it’s important for both truck drivers and pedestrian drivers to be aware and conscious of each other. Here are some safety tips for truckers this summer season:

  1. Inspect your truck before each drive
  2. Zero tolerance for distractions
  3. Stay well rested
  4. Keep your lane of travel to a single lane when possible
  5. Be aware of civilian drivers

At Evan Transportation, we make sure all of our drivers receive the proper training to keep them safe while on the roadways. Our drivers have years of experience before getting behind the wheel, so beginners mistakes are rare. Our drivers are familiar with the roadways and highways they use when transporting product, so routes taken are the most efficient and safest for our drivers and product alike.

If you need product transported during this upcoming summer season, make sure to choose safety and use Evan Transportation Inc. for all of your transportation needs. We service the following areas:

  1. Maryland

Driving Competition Test Trucker Skills

Wednesday, May 7th, 2014

TrucksOn May 4th, 2014, 100 truckers from the Northeast and Midwest met behind the Mack Truck Museum in Allentown to compete in the Lehigh Valley Truck Driving Championships Tune Up Drive. The competition raises money for scholarships for high school students looking to enter the field of transportation.

Trucker skills are tested in areas such as turning, parking, and backing up. There are about seven problems set up on a course, each having the potential to award 50 points. Cones and lines are used to help judges score the truckers while they complete the problems. Points are deducted whenever a line is crossed or a cone is knocked over or flattened. The problems used during the competition are based on real life problems truckers’ face during their day to day assignments.  Some of the problems truckers faced were making tight turns and parking on a scale. There are three different axle categories, 3-axle, 4-axle, and 5-axle that the truckers compete in. Winners for this year’s competition included Roland Boluc from FedEx Express and Fred Schenk of Sunoco.

Truckers from Evan Transportation should choose a year to test their trucker skills at the competition for a good cause. At Evan Transportation we service areas within the Mid-Atlantic region such as:

  1. Central Pennsylvania (Allentown)
  2. Northern Virginia
  3. Maryland
  4. New Jersey
  5. Delaware

We are able to transport a large variety of product such as:

  1. General freight
  2. Lumber
  3. Beverages
  4. Steel

Our employees include transportation and trucking veterans who understand and relate to the industry and will help provide solutions to any problem effectively and quickly. Evan Transportation has been in the transportation business for over 20 years and we use our skilled truckers to help build long term relationships with our customers. What is a Jack-Knife Accident?

Tuesday, December 17th, 2013

A jack-knife accident is the name for an accident where the trailer exceeds a 45 degree angle relative to the tractor. The end result is that the tractor can’t rectify the sharp angle between itself and the trailer, and it usually ends up with the tractor at a 90 degree angle or greater relative to the trailer.

A jack-knife accident is caused when the wheels of the trailer start to skin and the trailer begins to move faster than the cab. There are several factors that can cause a tractor trailer to jack-knife. Slippery wet or icy roads are the most common culprits in jack-knife accidents. The loss of traction can cause the trailer to slide out in one direction or another, especially if the trailer is empty and lighter. Hard braking can also cause the trailer to jack-knife if it doesn’t slow down in time.

So how do truck drivers prevent the trailer from jack-knifing? The first step is to always be on the lookout for trailer swing. If the trailer seems to be moving out in one direction or another, let go of the brake and increase speed if necessary to pull the trailer back in line. If the tractor itself is jack-knifing, it may be because of sudden acceleration. Let go of the accelerator and steer out to regain control. Another way to prevent jack-knifing is to brake before turns instead of during turns, which prevents the trailer from going faster than the tractor.

Different Types of Tractor Trailers

Tuesday, July 30th, 2013

You see them every day on the highway. Tractor trailers, also known as semi-trailers, move a whopping 68% of goods delivered in the U.S. More than 5.6 million are registered in the U.S, and there are 3.2 million truck drivers in the U.S, who collectively drive about 140 billion miles a year to get goods to their destinations. But what do you know about the different kinds of tractor trailers? You might be surprised to find out that there are several types of tractor trailers.

tractor trailer

Box Trucks

This is the most common kind of tractor trailer. The trailer is in the shape of a wedge, meaning that it is taller in the back than in the front. These trailers come in 28-foot as well as 45-foot sizes. A 45-foot wedge has a capacity of about 3,000 cubic feet.

Container Trucks

These trucks carry containers that can be shipped overseas on container ships. These containers have about half the capacity of a box truck, at 1,172 cubic feet.

Refrigerated Trucks

Also known as “reefer trucks,” these trucks are essentially box trucks that also have a refrigeration unit behind the cabin of the truck in order to keep the contents of the trailer cool.

Flatbed Truck

Flatbed trucks are used to transport things of odd or oversize dimensions that would not fit in a normal trailer.

Tanker Trucks

Tanker trucks carry liquids, and range in capacity from 1,000 to 9,000 gallons. They can carry food grade and toxic grade liquids, and often require a special license to transport the latter.
