Maryland: The Top Motor Vehicle Enforcement State

Friday, October 24th, 2014

Motor Vehicle EnforcementMotor vehicle enforcement along with truck inspections are an important part of vehicle and road safety across the nation. Without motor vehicle enforcement, truck drivers would have the ability to ignore safety codes and traffic laws, making the road dangerous. Recently, the American Transportation Research Institute released a report entitled “Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement- Top 10 High-Performance States.” The report ranks the states on a point system spanning over eleven main criteria areas. Maryland was proudly ranked number 1 in this report, while also ranking number 1 in the level of inspection intensity, a report made by Overdrive Magazine. Maryland received such a ranking from Overdrive because of their rate of inspection per lane-mile of interstate within their state borders. The Maryland inspection rate was three times that of the national average of state inspections.

Motor Vehicle Enforcement Criteria

The following criteria areas were used by the American Transportation Research Institute to determine the ranking of states in motor vehicle enforcement. All criteria are based per million vehicle miles traveled.

  1. Fatal Crashes
  2. Overall Crashes
  3. Roadside Inspections
  4. Clean Inspections- Inspections without violation
  5. Overall Violations
  6. Out of Service Violations

How to Safely Drive Around Tractor Trailers & Trucks

Wednesday, July 17th, 2013

Every day out on roads and highways across the country, there are accidents involving tractor trailers and semi-trucks. Many of these accidents are avoidable if the driver of the other vehicle had been mindful of how to drive around tractor trailers. There are many factors to consider when driving alongside or near these large vehicles. It’s important to follow many safety regulations to avoid any accidents.

Here are a few tips to help you navigate safely around tractor trailers:

  • Give trucks adequate space to navigate – Trucks routinely carry 80,000lbs or more of weight. Sometimes their tires can blow out unexpectedly, possibly causing them to swerve. They are also susceptible to winds, especially when they are completely empty. It can create a “sailboat” like effect that can cause the truck to be blown back and forth while the truck is driving. Giving a truck adequate space is one of the sure ways to avoid an accident.

  • Beware of truck’s blind spots – Trucks have more blind spots than the normal car does. It’s safer to pass a semi-truck on the left rather than the right. Most of the time, the trucker won’t even know you’re there on the side of their vehicle, so it’s best to pass them as quickly as possible if you can. It’s dangerous if they decide to make a sudden lane change.
  • Give trucks room for right turns – Many tractor-trailers make wide right turns, so giving them space to do so is absolutely essential. Never try to pass a truck on the right side, especially if they are trying to make a right turn. Trucks are big and need A LOT of room to make those kind of turns. It’s important to observe safe driving laws when driving around trucks.

If you follow these few tips, you’ll be able to share the road with tractor trailers and you’ll be able to avoid any accidents that could occur from driving unsafely around these tractor-trailers and trucks. And if you need freight transported, choose Evan Transportation!

A Few Interesting Trucking Facts

Monday, June 24th, 2013

Sure, you count on trucking companies like Evan Transportation to reliably get your freight to its destination on time, but how much do you really know about the trucking industry? If you’re interesting in trucking or just have a passing curiosity, there are a lot of interesting facts and tidbits to consider in regards to trucking. It has a long and varied history that you may have not known about.

For example, it may interest you to know that the first tractor trailer was invented in 1914 by Charles Freuhauf, who was a German-American blacksmith. Freuhauf built the truck in Detroit at a merchant’s request to transport his boat to the Ford Motor Company. He called his product a “semi-trailer.”  Freuhauf was then asked to build a similar tractor trailer to haul lumber, leading him to establish the Freuhauf Trailer Company in 1918. Requests for the tractor trailer vehicle were enough that Feuhauf had a somewhat successful company based around tractor-trailer manufacturing.

And another interesting fact: all tractor-trailers have a “fifth wheel” that provides a link between the semi-trailer and the truck, tractor unit, leading trailer or dolly unit. The term “fifth wheel” comes from a similar concept used for four-wheel horse drawn carriages and wagons. The wheel itself was placed on the rear frame section of the truck, which back then only had four wheels, this wheel that was placed on the frame was the “fifth wheel” hence the name.

There are all kinds of points in history that made trucking what it is today. The Motor Carrier act, established in 1935 made it so the Interstate Commerce Commission could “grant operating permits, approve trucking routes,” and “set uniform tariff rates for hauling freight,” but due to the lack of competition this created among trucking companies, the ICC was abolished in 1995. This created a more free market experience for truckers and the trucking industry as a whole.

And here’s a bit of our history: Evan Transportation was founded in 1992 by Jerry Wolfarth, who at the time had over 25 years of experience in the trucking and transportation industry. Make Your Next Freight Shipment with Evan Transportation!

Tuesday, June 4th, 2013

If you have a large shipment that can’t be shipped by traditional needs and that you need delivered to states like New Jersey, Delaware, central Pennsylvania or northern Virginia, then look no further than Evan Transportation. We are based in Baltimore, MD and we service the Mid-Atlantic region. In most cases, your shipment will be picked up and arrive at its destination on the same day.

But, how do you know if you should use a freight carrier? Usually if your shipment is over 100 pounds or if it is too large or bulky to be shipped by traditional means, you’d go with a freight carrier due to size and weight limits imposed by traditional shippers. Smaller shipments may be consolidated with other shipments and larger shipments may warrant their own dedicated truck or container. And if your shipment is fragile, there are a few options for protecting your shipment including blanket wraps.

The way freight shipment works is like a very large version of parcel shipping. It is the shipper’s responsibility to make sure that everything to be shipped is properly prepared for the journey. The shipper is responsible for having everything properly packaged. This means using whatever boxes and crates are appropriate for shipping the materials and cushioning them in whatever fashion desired. We ship all kinds of materials, including:

  • General Freight
  • Retail Merchandise
  • Paper & Paper Products
  • Lumber
  • Beverages
  • Steel
  • Foodstuff
  • Alcoholic Beverages as permitted in NJ, PA, DE, MD, VA, NC, SC

So, the next time you have a large shipment that can’t be shipped by traditional means, call on Evan Transportation. We have the trucks drivers and the trucks required to get your shipments to their destination on time.
