Better fuel efficiency practices can save you big time at the pump.

Whether you’re a semi-truck driver or managing a fleet of trucks, minimizing your fuel costs can save you a ton of money. Gasoline and diesel costs add up quickly in an industry that relies on pickups, deliveries, and travel time. And since semi-trucks are so heavy, their fuel efficiency isn’t great to begin with. Semi-trucks only get about 6.5 miles per gallon on average. Here are a few tips that can save you at the pump. (more…)

Tips to Improve Freight Truck Fuel Efficiency

Diesel fuel can get expensive when you run a fleet of freight trucks. Check out these fuel efficiency tips!

Improving the performance of a truck and freight truck fuel efficiency not only directly leads to lower costs over time, but can also contribute to lengthening the life of any vehicle. In trucking or haulage related businesses, a third of the running costs can be spent on fuel alone, this can lead to astronomical savings. This all comes down to several factors. The factors which decide whether or not peak freight truck fuel efficiency is achieved or not include: the habits of the driver, the quality of vehicle maintenance, and truck upgrades. The driver, however, makes the single biggest difference when it comes to freight truck fuel efficiency. (more…)

Increasing Fuel Efficiency

Tuesday, July 29th, 2014

Summer Storm SafetyIf you’re in charge of a fleet of tractor-trailers or semi trucks in Baltimore, you’re probably always looking for ways to conserve fuel. By making small changes, you can increase fuel efficiency, allowing the trucks to run longer and smoother, and ultimately saving money within your company. Take a look at these 5 tips for increasing fuel efficiently in your Baltimore fleet.

  1. Oil changes. By using synthetic oil and high-capacity filters, there is less stress put on the engine. Synthetic oil also retains its lubrication abilities for a longer period of time, allowing your engine to run smoothly even in extreme temperatures.
  2. A high-flow exhaust system and a high-flow air filter. Let your motor breathe! If the exhaust systems haven’t been repaired after years of driving, it has probably accumulated rust and has been worn down. Have your trucks inspected to see if replacement of the muffler and pipes is necessary. By installing high-flow parts, you will increase the efficiency of the motor, and you probably won’t have to replace these parts again!
  3. Tires & tire pressure. Tire pressure should be checked often to make sure that there are no air leaks, which can affect fuel efficiency. Opposed to what some might think, bigger tires actually reduce fuel efficiency, so it is best to stay with a dependable all-weather light truck tire.
  4. Helper springs. To continue on the topic of tires and tire pressure, helper springs assist in the suspension of the tires. If too much pressure is put on the tires, the truck will have to work harder, which means more fuel is used. Helper springs will adjust to the weight or load of the truck, relieving the tires from being too worn down.
  5. Spark plugs. Keeping an eye on your spark plugs is important because the color of them can tell you a lot about your vehicle, and your engine in particular.  If they’re discolored, it could either mean that the truck is using too much fuel, or that it’s not using enough. When checking spark plugs, the O2 sensor should also be examined.

By following these tips, your Baltimore tractor-trailers and semi trucks will be more fuel efficient in no time. If you have any more questions about fuel efficiency, give Evan Transportation a call at 443-673-3365 or visit our contact page.

Axle Configuration Key To Fuel Efficiency?

Wednesday, January 22nd, 2014

The classic axle configuration for semi trucks is a 6×4 setup. New tests, however, suggest that the less common 6×2 setup may help improve fuel efficiency and save drivers money.

According to overdriveonline.com, the Carbon War room initiative and the North American Council for Freight Efficiency have worked together to produce new information comparing the fuel efficiency of 6×2 and 6×4 tractor axle setups. The two organizations reviewed existing literature and also performed their own tests to compare the fuel efficiency of the two axle set-ups. The tests showed better efficiency with the 6×2 setup, which varied from an increase of 1.6 percent to an increase of 4.6 percent. Therefore, “NACFE concluded an average 2.5 percent could be expected for many fleets with a conversion to a 6×2 configuration.” In addition, the average fleet could expect a payback on its investment in 20 months, a little less than 2 years.

You can find the summary of the report, which also reports on the effects of speed limiting technologies and wide-single tires on fuel efficiency, here on Overdrive Online’s website. According to the report, wide-single tires resulted in a gain of between 3-6 percent fuel efficiency.

Fuel Efficient Semi-Trucks

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

With new fuel economy standards for semi-trucks set to begin next year, truck manufacturers are rolling out new models to comply with the regulations. Trucks will have to get at least 7.2 miles to the gallon starting in 2014, the first time that mileage for semi-trucks will ever be federally mandated. Most trucks today average about 6 miles per gallon.

Freightliner is set to deliver its 2014 Cascadia Evolution heavy truck which has delivered up to 10.67 miles per gallon in tests when combined with an aerodynamic trailer. The truck reached this mileage when tested on an 8.5 mile closed course for 1,000 miles with an average speed of 60 mph and a GCW of 76,000 pounds. In a 2,400 mile test rule from San Diego to Gastonia, N.C., the Cascadia Evolution averaged 9.31 miles per gallon at a cruising speed of 62 mph and a GCW of 76,000 pounds. The current model Cascadia, combined with a normal trailer, averaged about 7 mile per gallon on the same run for comparison.

Cummins and Peterbilt Motors are also set to put their new Class 8 Peterbilt 587 on the market, which averaged 9.9 miles per gallon on 11 test runs between Forth Worth and Vernon, Texas, with a GCW of 65,000 pounds. The aerodynamic truck and trailer combination was designed with lighter weight material, a more efficient engine, electronic controls that optimize fuel use based on route information, lower rolling resistance tires, and “a system that converts exhaust heat into power delivered to the crankshaft,” according to roadandtrack.com

The 54% increase in fuel efficiency of the Peterbilt 587 not only stands to save truckers $25,000 annually on fuel, it also results in a 35% reduction in greenhouse gas released annually per truck.
