It’s never too early to start thinking about spring cleaning! After a long and cold winter, the best way to feel refreshed and ready for the spring season is with a good cleaning in your home and office space. For truckers, their big rig is their workspace as well as their “home away from home,” so it’s crucial to ensure it’s clean and in tip-top shape! Continue reading for a spring cleaning checklist to get the spring season off to a great start.

Hand Washing

While it takes a bit more effort, the best way to keep your truck clean is to hand wash it. A pressure wash is helpful every now and then, but they can be too hard on the paint and cause it to chip away. Your truck is a very expensive piece of equipment, so you want to ensure it is well taken care of and properly maintained.

To hand wash your truck, start by giving it a good soak. Be sure to use a high-quality automotive soap, as this will be easier on the paint than dish soap or detergent. You also want to use a quality mitt, such as a soft natural fiber wash mitt. Clean one small area at a time, being sure to clean all the small nooks and crannies, then rinse off the soap as soon as you finish the section. It’s a good idea to take the time to clean your truck on an overcast day or in a shady area to ensure it dries evenly. On a sunny day, you may see sunspots and streaks.

Waxing and Polishing

After the truck is completely dry, carry on your spring cleaning with a coat of wax to protect the paint. This is especially important after a snowy winter, as the harsh weather can really take a toll on the paint job. Try to use the best quality wax possible- although it will be more expensive, it will provide a much better finish. Apply an even coat of wax in a circular motion, one small section at a time, and let it set for a minute or two, then take a clean, dry cloth and polish and buff it out. By polishing one section at a time, you can take a few moments in between loading or unloading or when you’re on a break, rather than waxing the entire truck at one time.
